Plan-to-Section (90 degrees Conversion) for Expt.3_Bridge

  • Idea of Plan-to-Section

To construct a bridge spanning over the valley chosen in the previous post, its sections have to relate to the concept and design of certain buildings' plans as provided in the lecture slides. Therefore, this comes the 90 degree conversion to turn the horizontal plans of given buildings into the vertical sections of my bridge in this experiment 3.
  • Design Direction

Talking about my design direction, I have seclected a plan with many layers of concentric rectangles as my basic design concept (As shown below). Then, I tried to make each rectangle into different sizes of quadrilateral by rotating it to certain angle. The major idea is that I want to creat many sections of varying shapes of quadrilateral in layers throughout the bridge so as to generate a sense of transformation or twist although the bridge still looks spanning over the valley in one directions without bending. As such, there are several sections in the first half part of bridge showing the changing sizes of the quadrilaterals as follows to creat various dimension of spaces for different purpose of activities in the faculty of architecture. Finally, the another half part of bridge will be the reflection of first half part to give the whole structure.

The space near entrances on both sides are mainly used for library and gallery.

Cross-section b
The space here is mainly used as gallery and library on two different sides of bridge respectively.

Cross-section c
This is the conjection between gallery and meeting rooms as well as between library and computer laboratory on two different sides of bridge respectively.

Cross-section d
The space here is mainly used as meeting rooms and computer laboratory on two different sides of bridge respectively.

Cross-section e
This is the conjection between meeting rooms and offices as well as between computer lab and studio spaces.

Cross-section f
The space here is mainly used as offices, studio spaces and workshop for staff, students and non-staff members.

Cross-section g
This is the conjection between offices and central lecture hall as well as between studio spaces with workshop and central lecture hall too on two different sides of bridge respectively.

 Cross-section h
The space here is mainly used as the central lecture hall on the lower floor level while space on upper floor level is a common space for students, staff and non-staff members to have a rest. There is also a large shade above this space for avoiding excess sunlight entering the large space.
